The George International Study Abroad Scholarship will award up to $5,000 to 40-50 students each year for the next five years. The scholarships are funded by alumnus William W. “Bill” George, IE 1964, who was not able to study abroad during his time at Tech and wants to afford students the opportunity he never had.
“It’s important that all Georgia Tech graduates become global citizens and understand how business, commerce, engineering, and science work around the globe,” George said. Expanding Tech’s global footprint and graduating good global citizens is also part of Tech’s strategic plan.
The deadline to apply is Oct. 15. Those interested can apply online.
In addition to the George scholarships, the Office of International Education administers several other funding opportunities for students looking to go abroad. Award amounts and submission requirements vary by scholarship. View a list of scholarship online at www.oie.gatech.edu/scholarships.
George received his BSIE with high honors from Georgia Tech, his MBA with high distinction from Harvard University, where he was a Baker Scholar, and honorary PhDs from Georgia Tech, Bryant University, and University of St. Thomas. George is the former chairman and chief executive officer of Medtronic. He joined Medtronic in 1989 as president and chief operating officer, was chief executive officer from 1991-2001, and board chair from 1996-2002. Earlier in his career, he was a senior executive with Honeywell and Litton Industries and served in the U.S. Department of Defense.
