The Jane Chumley Ammons Scholarship was recently established by the Stewart School of Industrial & Systems Engineering (ISyE) alumni, faculty, staff, and friends to honor the service, research, education, and leadership of Dr. Jane Chumley Ammons, ISyE School Chair.

Dr. Ammons is a pioneer of engineering for women, a supporter of enhancing educational opportunities for underrepresented minorities, and a leader in the overall field of industrial and systems engineering.

Her tenure at Georgia Tech has been marked by many firsts and many successes. She was the first female ISyE Ph.D. recipient (1982) and the first female ISyE faculty member. She previously served as associate dean for faculty affairs in the College of Engineering, and in 2011, was appointed to hold the H. Milton Stewart and Carolyn J. Stewart School Chair in ISyE, becoming the first female school chair in the College of Engineering.

In addition to her institutional service, Dr. Ammons has had a strong impact in the external field of industrial and systems engineering. She is a past-president of the Institute of Industrial Engineers and has chaired the National Science Foundation Engineering Advisory Committee. She has also served as a member of the Technical Committee for the Uganda: Millennium Science Initiative Project co-financed by the World Bank and has served as a Program Evaluator for ABET, the engineering education accreditation organization.

The new scholarship made its debut at the recent 2014 Women in Engineering Banquet and was awarded to Breona Jenkins.

Breona Jenkins, an IE graduating senior, was selected to receive the award for her extraordinary motivation, abilities, and leadership in the engineering world and beyond. Jenkins is an “academic star.” In addition to her high honors, she has held several leadership and extracurricular positions while at Tech such as Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society vice president of outreach programs, FASET leader, Kid@Kollege committee chair, peer advisor for the Office of International Education, Team Buzz project coordinator, member of the Mentor and Mentee Program with Women in Engineering, and past president of the Spanish Speaking Organization. Outside of Tech, she has a passion for tutoring high school students in math and dancing.
