Project Description

Problem Statement: The sales process for capital equipment is complex and lengthy, often involving multiple stakeholders such as engineers, plant managers, purchasing departments, maintenance teams, and executives who collaborate to identify the best technical solution. One of the most critical factors in closing a sale is demonstrating the Return on Investment (ROI) of the proposed equipment, as decision-makers use this information to make informed budgetary decisions.

In many cases, presenting the financial benefits of capital equipment in a clear, precise manner is vital to securing approval, especially in large corporations with stringent budgeting processes. Decision-makers need to see how the investment will lead to cost savings through improved efficiency, reduced downtime, energy savings, or other operational benefits.

This tool will empower Winton sales representatives to effectively communicate the financial advantages of their solutions. By providing a clear breakdown of initial costs, long-term savings, and payback periods, the calculator will help sales teams present compelling ROI cases to decision-makers. Whether used directly during sales presentations or indirectly as part of a proposal, this tool will streamline the sales process and enhance the persuasiveness of Winton’s value proposition in capital equipment purchases.

RE: Return on Investment (ROI) Calculator Software

Overview: We are seeking a Georgia Tech student team interested in engaging with a local manufacturing company to design and develop a Return on Investment (ROI) calculator software tool. This tool will assist technical salespeople in demonstrating the potential financial benefits of purchasing capital equipment to improve manufacturing efficiency for their clients. The software should enable users to input various financial and operational data, calculate ROI, and generate detailed reports for use during customer presentations and sales discussions.

Project Scope:

The ROI calculator software will allow users to perform calculations based on key data inputs, such as:

• Initial Investment Costs: Purchase cost of equipment, installation fees, training costs, etc.

• Operational Savings: Energy efficiency improvements, labor savings, reduced material waste, etc.

• Revenue Impact: Increased production capacity, higher product quality, faster turnaround times, etc.

• Discount Rate: Apply a discount rate to future savings for a present value calculation.

• Maintenance and Operating Costs: Estimated ongoing costs for operating and maintaining the new equipment.

• Payback Period: Time it takes to recover the initial investment.

• Net Present Value (NPV): Value of future cash flows discounted to the present.

• Internal Rate of Return (IRR): Expected rate of return on the investment over time.

The software will calculate and display key financial metrics, including ROI, NPV, IRR, and payback period, and generate customer-ready reports that highlight the benefits of the proposed capital equipment investment.

Key Features:

User-friendly Interface: Intuitive design that allows technical salespeople with minimal financial expertise to easily input data and generate results.

Customization: Ability to adjust input variables and create custom scenarios for different customers and equipment solutions.

Reporting: Generate clear and professional reports in PDF or other formats for sharing with customers, including charts, graphs, and financial summaries.

Cloud-based or On-premises Options: Flexibility for hosting the software either in the cloud for remote access or as a local installation for offline use.

Security: Ensure data privacy and secure handling of financial data.

Technical Requirements:

• The software should be developed using modern, maintainable programming languages and frameworks.

• Compatibility with various platforms (Windows, macOS, web-based, etc.).

• Ability to handle large datasets and complex calculations efficiently.

• Option for multi-language support in future versions.

• Mobile-friendly design or a separate mobile app for field use.

• Ability to post on our secure password protected portal on our website where users would have to register to receive a password to access the calculator.

• Two versions – simple and more complex

Deliverables

• Fully functional ROI calculator software that meets the outlined specifications.

• Documentation includes user manuals, technical guides, and maintenance plans.

• Training for internal staff on how to use and administer the software.
