Title: Industrial Internet of Things and Smart Personalized Manufacturing
Abstract: The Industrial Internet of Things enables the connection of sensors, devices, and systems, and the rapid communication of data among them. Such data provide unprecedented opportunities for smart manufacturing, including real-time monitoring and optimal decision making. This talk will reflect on the advances of manufacturing in response to several technological revolutions. An example of lithium-ion battery manufacturing will be used to discuss the characteristics of smart manufacturing and the need for data analytics research. In addition, connection among customers, manufacturers, and suppliers is also creating a new paradigm of personalized manufacturing where customers actively participate in the design and fabrication of products or product components. Recent research activities in personalized manufacturing will also be highlighted.
Bio: S. Jack Hu joined the University of Georgia (UGA) as the UGA Foundation Distinguished Professor of Engineering and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost on July 1, 2019. As Provost he oversees instruction, research, public service and outreach, and information technology. Prior to joining UGA, he was the Vice President for Research, the J. Reid and Polly Anderson Professor of Manufacturing, Professor of Mechanical Engineering, and Professor of Industrial and Operations Engineering at the University of Michigan.
Hu has authored or co-authored nearly 200 peer-reviewed journal articles related to his research in manufacturing systems, assembly, and engineering statistics. He holds six patents and has worked closely with several industry partners to enhance manufacturing quality and productivity.
Hu is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering and a foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME), and the International Academy for Production Engineering (CIRP). He is the recipient of the ASME William T. Ennor Manufacturing Technology Award, the SME Gold Medal, and several best paper awards.
