American Airlines

Client Profile

American Airlines is one of the world's largest and has been in operation for nearly 100 years. Its 1,500 airplanes carry passengers and cargo on more than 5,000 flights per day, along 1,200 unique routes to more than 350 destinations in 60 countries.

Project Description

AA Cargo carries billions of pounds of cargo annually between US and the rest of the world. Cargo capacity on AA flights is limited by aircraft capabilities and passenger and baggage considerations. To destinations where AA does not fly, we can partner with other airlines, and also trucks can be utilized to deliver the shipments. This project aims to develop models to maximize expected profits from cargo shipments by determining cargo allocations to each route, as well as determine how many trucks to deploy on which routes to complement the operation, given origin-destination cargo demand, yield, and cost estimates. The model should satisfy certain business rules that will be provided. Deliverables would be a tool (platform to be determined) that can ingest inputs (demand/yield/cost estimates, AA and partner schedules, cost of operating trucks, etc.), run the optimization model, and output the results to file(s) with specified format.
