Client Profile
Emory at Dunwoody Family Medicine provides healthcare for the entire family, including newborn baby check-ups, routine childhood physicals and immunizations, school physicals, wellness exams, acute care visits, same-day procedures, and chronic care visits for all ages. The clinic also provides immediate access to laboratory, radiology, and select specialty services.Emory at Dunwoody Family Medicine is also home to Emory’s Family Medicine Residency program. Faculty and resident providers deliver comprehensive care for the entire family in over 35,000 patient visits per year with various levels of medical complexity. The residents are highly qualified doctors who are training to become family medicine specialists. They work closely with experienced family medicine specialists to ensure that patients get the highest quality of care while also contributing to their specialty education.
Project Description
Project Background:In the Spring semester, Team 29 developed a simulation model to perform what-if analyses at our Dunwoody Family Medicine Clinic, helping us improve operational efficiency. Building on this foundation, we aim to expand the simulation model to address the educational aspect of our Dunwoody Family Medicine Clinic —optimizing resident training.
Project Objective:
Our primary objective is to refine and extend the existing simulation model to help ensure that residents meet their training requirements efficiently. Each resident must complete a three-year residency program to become a licensed MD, which includes fulfilling a specific number of patient visits and specialty training hours. This project will focus on:
Mapping out the most effective pathways for residents to achieve their required training hours and visits.
Identifying bottlenecks in resident scheduling and resource allocation.
Providing data-driven recommendations to optimize training efficiency without compromising patient care.
Expected Outcomes
An enhanced simulation model that incorporates residency training parameters.
A strategic plan for scheduling residents to meet their required visits and hours efficiently.
Data insights that can support clinic administrators in improving both patient care and educational outcomes.
Scope & Deliverables
Data Analysis: Evaluate past resident schedules and clinic patient flow data.
Model Expansion: Modify the current simulation to include residency training constraints.
Optimization Strategies: Develop algorithms or heuristics to suggest the best training schedules.
Validation & Testing: Ensure the model accurately represents real-world residency training processes.
Final Report & Recommendations: Present findings, best practices, and a user guide for implementation.
